Can you imagine living your life with only 3 hours of sleep a day? Think about how much stuff you’d get done! Apparently, not only is this possible on a regular basis, it’s been done! I first read about this “Uberman’s Sleep Schedule” here: http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2002/4/15/103358/720.
Basically, you take six 20-30 minute naps on regular intervals throughout your day. For example one at 2AM, 6AM, 10AM, 2PM, 6PM, and 10PM. So, every four hours. While this sounds like it wouldn’t be enough sleep (especially since most of us get the society-accepted 6-8 hours of sleep a night), by sticking to the schedule and only sleeping for 20-30 minutes per nap, you’re pretty much exhausting yourself, so your mind enters glorious REM sleep right when you hit the pillow for a nap. So, 6 naps times 20 minutes equals 2 hours of REM sleep. That’s actually not bad considering how much of our 6-8 hour regular sleep time is spent tossing, turning, and thinking about random crap :D
I would love to try this for a few months, but the unpredictable schedule of family life won’t let me. Less time spent on sleep would be pretty useful for a guy like me, though! With The Pocalypse and game projects on my plate, an extra 4-6 hours a day would be invaluable! Of course, someone in my position must balance family, fun, friends, work, AND sleep, so the Uberman’s Sleep Schedule is not for me :D
