Uberman’s Sleep 09/13/2011

by Joe

Can you imagine living your life with only 3 hours of sleep a day? Think about how much stuff you’d get done! Apparently, not only is this possible on a regular basis, it’s been done! I first read about this “Uberman’s Sleep Schedule” here: http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2002/4/15/103358/720.

Basically, you take six 20-30 minute naps on regular intervals throughout your day. For example one at 2AM, 6AM, 10AM, 2PM, 6PM, and 10PM. So, every four hours. While this sounds like it wouldn’t be enough sleep (especially since most of us get the society-accepted 6-8 hours of sleep a night), by sticking to the schedule and only sleeping for 20-30 minutes per nap, you’re pretty much exhausting yourself, so your mind enters glorious REM sleep right when you hit the pillow for a nap. So, 6 naps times 20 minutes equals 2 hours of REM sleep. That’s actually not bad considering how much of our 6-8 hour regular sleep time is spent tossing, turning, and thinking about random crap :D

I would love to try this for a few months, but the unpredictable schedule of family life won’t let me. Less time spent on sleep would be pretty useful for a guy like me, though! With The Pocalypse and game projects on my plate, an extra 4-6 hours a day would be invaluable! Of course, someone in my position must balance family, fun, friends, work, AND sleep, so the Uberman’s Sleep Schedule is not for me :D

Would any of you try this? Let me know! :D

(Note: I am not a doctor! Try at your own risk!)

@Bonzai – Awesome! Let me know how it goes! And, good luck and stay safe and healthy! :D

Joe on September 13, 2011 at 12:27 pm

Interesting scene.

Maybe Joe’s become a vampire?
I’ll keep waiting and watching to find out. Keep going!

Taioko on September 13, 2011 at 12:28 pm

Haha the uberman sleep thing.. i might try it. it will be difficult though trying to balance with school. but that just adds more to the challenge :D

Alex apocalypse on September 13, 2011 at 12:31 pm

I actually did try this a while ago. It was so hard to break in to it and I didnt have the resolve to go more than four days. I did however get a lot of work done on comic stuff so it might be worth while for you to try.

Toasty on September 13, 2011 at 12:32 pm

man.. now i HAVE to know if nathan is related to Cross. and if so. How??? gah. so many questions now…

Alex apocalypse on September 13, 2011 at 12:36 pm

OH SHIT SON!!! That is all.

Matthew on September 13, 2011 at 1:19 pm

So Joe cured Rosa of the Thirst, with his awesome Joeness. Well, thats 1 less vampire to worry about. if they make Rusty join the army, I hope they dont give him one of those hats… I like his hair. I think we’re nearing the point where Bernie, Jess, and Terry finaly put everything toggether to realize how deep twisted the Blood/Virus lines are.

Leviticus on September 13, 2011 at 2:33 pm

so Nathan could be Cross’ relative… And also joe’s blood cured Rosa’s thirst, but as Joe is still alive he may be becoming a vampire… Ok, he’s not dead, bet the next scene is him waking up after bernie and jess left the hospital and asking himself why his heart isn’t beating… I’m sure Inner Joe controled the vampire virus (he doesn’t want to be one or something) but when bernie shot him and he saw in the hospital that there was no other way, he let the vampire virus infect him, and that’s why his heart beats stopped.

Blues on September 13, 2011 at 4:45 pm

from what I’ve seen of friends on the uberman sleep schedule, they are ‘awake’ but… not quite in their normal minds until switching back to REM cycle sleep for a few days. Its as though while waking their Dream Selves are in fact awake not them themselves… oops I may have done that a few weeks back with shenanigans (not sure if i’ve been the same since)

sh4d0wfl4re on September 13, 2011 at 6:16 pm

OMG Hammerfist/Joe blood quenches the Thirst! Rosa is the cure! Doc is totally nutso with his LFB! No wonder I’m showing this to my friend in a few minutes! It’s zombie-killing, robot-zapping, plant=exploding, zompire-stabbing, superhero-blood-drinking, head-shoting, Joe’s-freaking-better-than-Bernie awesome!

monstermanchego on September 13, 2011 at 11:29 pm

I’m starting to see an MMO game for New Hammerston. That would be pretty cool, don’t know how much work that’d be though…

ZombieKin9 on September 13, 2011 at 11:40 pm

This is big news!

frida on September 14, 2011 at 12:06 am

i have a question joe how much is a credit like one credit is one bread or something like 1 credit is one us dollar

ryan on September 14, 2011 at 12:17 am

There’s a typo near the beginning. I forget his name, as I haven’t read this in a bit, but the guard with the blue hat said “The bank notes of the past are have become more useless than the paper they’re printed on.” It should read “The bank notes of the past have become more useless than the paper they’re printed on.”

Sweet_Ride on September 14, 2011 at 1:23 am

Im guessing that when Rose bit Joe inner Joe captured the virus and was controling it. So thats why she doesnt have the thirst anymore.

Zombie Killer on September 14, 2011 at 2:33 am

We all know joe isn’t going to die, but if it went like, “blues” said, joe might be a zombie, in his own way of course! XD It’s still more important if inner joe is strong enough, and i mean, if he isn’t he’ll go into ‘hibernation’ unless woken up, or if he is, he’ll clash against outer joe for control, again OR if he’s way too strong, he’ll be the one that wakes up. But what’s more important is outer joe’s deal with that elder. There’s a lot of scenarios, and it’s Author joe’s final say. Thumbs up by me! XD

Decifer on September 14, 2011 at 4:55 am

I guess that, when Joe’s blood entered Rosa’s bloodstream,it prevented the vampire virus AND is satisfying the thirst. I really hope Annika is Joe’s brother,I wonder how much he’ll be THIS pissed when he wakes up! :D

[Author Joe,your a great writer,BUT-I-HATE-YOUR-DAMNED-CLIFFHANGERS!]

Happy Vampire on September 14, 2011 at 5:16 am

Dude, your writing is getting better and better.
I’m very curious to see how this all plays out.
But please promise us one thing, I don’t care how long it takes but please, do end the story/stories. Don’t stop before its done :P

Valvar on September 14, 2011 at 6:00 am

Joe your not putting enough into one episode

Leinahtan on September 14, 2011 at 8:26 am

Wrto the sleep schedule: I might try it. One thing to note, though, is that you do occasionally see people who just don’t need much sleep. An uncle of mine naturally only slept 3 hours a day, so he was able to work two jobs and still have free time left over. Sadly, I find myself needing the full amount :(

Good job on the blockhopper. It’s much better balanced than defense.

“Where’s the nearest bar? I have 50 credits to spend”
LOL what an asshole!

Geoff on September 14, 2011 at 10:06 am

Joe you are a wonderful entertainer, the proof of this is in your captivated audience. (I’ve been trying to refrain from the sort of blank comment that just says your doing good)

sh4d0wfl4re on September 14, 2011 at 10:06 am

Oh man I would literally die and turn into a zombie if I tried that sleep schedule. When I was in college I had a bet to get by on one hour a night for a week. Didn’t work out too well >.<
It's like, a biological impossibility to function on a schedule like that.

Grant on September 14, 2011 at 12:54 pm

@Leinahtan please remember that its nice that author Joe even makes these awesome comics. He has a life, and its nice that he even does (or tries to do) 3 addons to the story per week.

I so want to try that sleep schedule hehehe but sadly I have school D:
Great work author Joe!

HeladaFuego on September 14, 2011 at 1:46 pm

That sleep schedule seems dangerous… Whatever you do, keep in mind that sleeping is the most important activity for our health.

DramaNoMore on September 14, 2011 at 2:04 pm

ROSA joined the party!

On a serious note, Cross is the kid’s father? Wow. Now we just have to wait for Rusty and Nathan to bond a bit more, and then, when the kid meets his vampire-zombie dad who will undoubtedly offer him UNLIMITED POWAH to turn to the “dark side”, he gets to choose between two father figures. Yep. I see some good plot in the near future. I love me some good plot.

Locke on September 14, 2011 at 2:43 pm

@Locke i seriously dont think the kid cares about power. However he would do anything to be with his dad i guess.Oh well awesome comic sadly im running out of comments to write so u better make more tension or action scenes.

Dagzter on September 14, 2011 at 9:51 pm

Wow with every episode I like this even more, the plot keeps getting deeper and deeper like the old episodes of CSI with grissom still in the cast (not directing) :)

John on September 14, 2011 at 11:57 pm

these comics keep geting better and better but you relly need to make them longer.
i wod like to do the Uberman’s Sleep thing but ive got school … do you know how long it takes to let your mind sleep and your body doing stuf when ever you whant???

the slayer on September 15, 2011 at 1:53 am

You can download the episodes?

luca on September 15, 2011 at 4:28 am

For Eglish speakers, just trying to solve luca’s doubts about the series, and if there some other Spanish speakers watching this, maybe we could make a community in the forum :)

Blues on September 15, 2011 at 4:55 am

Is it me or is Rusty’s hair the same as a mutants hair?

Highcalibur10 on September 15, 2011 at 4:58 am

@Happy Vampire You hope Annika is Joe’s BROTHER? :P

Sweet_Ride on September 15, 2011 at 9:17 am

I have tried a version of this, and.. Personally failed miserably after a couple weeks. Though to be fair, I was trying to go from sleeping 11-13 hours a day.

It was quite a bit easier to sleep for 4 hours, then 1.5 hours in the afternoon. But I still feel the pull for abnormally long sleeps.

FDJustin on September 15, 2011 at 2:56 pm

Keep in mind with the Uberman schedule, REM is not the only important sleep cycle. For example, one of the cycles this sleep schedule has you skipping is the one that lets you heal, so you would be a lot more susceptible to injury/disease.
