Back to the Comic! 05/17/2011

by Joe

Thank you for all the feedback on The Pocalypse Defense! We’ve learned so much and we’re now working on our next game, which is not going to be The Pocalypse-related… for now :D We’re also taking the feedback from The Pocalypse Defense and I’m thinking of new game mechanics for the sequel (or, half-sequel)!

I’m glad people enjoyed the game and I hope you and your friends continue to play it!

Anyways, back to the comic! It feels like it’s been months since the last story update (this weekend felt extremely long)!

Enjoy Scene 21 – “He Came to Save Me”!

Thank you for voting for Bernie’s next move in the forums! Voting is now closed and we have a clear winner! :D

Please continue to vote! :D Bug’s sketch is still the incentive! Thank you for voting everyday!

You can follow The Pocalypse on Facebook (check out our paper doll pictures! Send me your own pics, too!), Twitter and RSS, too!

I think it’s a mistake to not focus your games around the comic. The Pocalypse Defense brought me here, I’d never heard of the comic. I’m glad to have read it all and will be a loyal reader. I’d rather see you put MORE of the comic into a game than less. Your first didn’t have any personality sprinkled into the actual gameplay portions of it.

Anyway, glad to see that Joe found Rosa! I’d love to see Rosa, Scrufflebeck (I hate that name) and such in a game, too. Especially a turn-based RPG (I could definitely see The Pocalypse Tactics)

MrShadesofGrey on May 17, 2011 at 12:10 pm

Same as what MrShadesofGrey said. The game introduced me to the site, at which point I read the entire comic, start to finish. Would love to see more story in the second game. (maybe even “play” out the first chapter?

nichoman on May 17, 2011 at 1:36 pm

I think Joe has a bright future in game making.

I can see it now: Pocalypse-Life 2: Episode 3.

Aethrys on May 17, 2011 at 2:24 pm

I doubt Joe will somehow transform into anything. Inner Joe may have let his guard down for bloodsucking, but I doubt Inner Joe will let the antibodies back down from resisting infection, considering Joe is already something we can call “infected” which we can deduce from him being able to enter the dream world and use that weird ass powers the Elder and Andy has.

Anon on May 17, 2011 at 2:47 pm

Hey guys… he said it wont have anything to do with it… for now. I’m not sure, but I think that usually means joe has a plan. Either that or I’m misreading it and he really means that the game AFTER the next one will be pocalypse related.

And YAY FOR NEW READERS! Thats really awesome.

Also, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. A Pocalypse turn based RPG would be awesome. I would actually like to see one more in the style of the original Final Fantasy games. But a tactical RPG would be cool too. But personally, I don’t want to push for something like that until later in the comic when there would be more characters/enemies/other stuff that would allow more fleshed out customization of the game.

Willy on May 17, 2011 at 2:50 pm

@MrShadesofGrey & nichoman – Thanks for reading! I’m glad The Pocalypse Defense is bringing people in! :D I’m just half of the team that creates our games (call us Green Pixel!), so we both get a say into what we make next! My programming skills are next to non-existent, so my plan is to keep learning and incorporate games right into the comic itself (in the form of battles, controlling characters, etc). Then, I’ll be making The Pocalypse games, art for Green Pixel games, and updating a comic three times a week. Oh boy… fun times ahead for me :D
@Willy – Agreed! A The Pocalypse RPG would be an amazing amount of work and, right now, I don’t have the skills or resources to pull it off. I’m also not sure how to run an RPG story parallel to the comic’s story. I’ll have to think about that. Maybe the two would only be loosely related or the game would be another timeline or would have different characters or would be backstory. The problem with making an RPG that would act as a “long scene” is that the comic’s story would continue during development. So, by the time the game is completed, the comic’s story would be further ahead :D I also want The Pocalypse’s comic story (the one I like to call the “main story”) to be exclusively continuous in the updates above. But, who knows what I’ll come up with! Huh, sorry about the rant, hope it all made sense! :D

Joe on May 17, 2011 at 3:19 pm

Poor Joe…

NeoWarrior on May 17, 2011 at 11:36 pm

Maybe whatever Joe has will go into Rosa and she will be cured with super strong skin and stuff too! Would be great! :D

Technolotips on May 18, 2011 at 1:23 am

MOAR GAMES!!!!!!!!!
I love reading your comics!!!!

Akuma_br on May 18, 2011 at 2:44 am

Joe; I hadn’t considered that you weren’t the only party involved in making your games. I see your point, I was just hoping that your next game would be a big hit (obviously you hope that too!) to drive more people to read your comic. It’s well done with a great original style (as far as I know) and you deserve more readers. Hope your next game makes it big either way!

MrShadesofGrey on May 18, 2011 at 3:33 am

loved the game joe great work and i lovethe update the story goes great so far

ryan on May 18, 2011 at 4:18 am

I just love the fact that an essencially selfish character like Joe becomes so selfless in regard to Rosa…

DramaNoMore on May 18, 2011 at 4:35 am

Nice pixel graphics!!!

3D4udovishe on May 18, 2011 at 6:18 am

Joe you big old genius you, to take the time to even have considered making games was phenomenal and still continuing the story along with taking time for work and family, what with the baby and all, also of course sleeping and eating, bathing, etc. i think i’d crack under all that, i appreciate every little second you put into everything, thank you very much

SpiritOfAdventure on May 18, 2011 at 8:12 am

@Akuma_br – We’re workin’ on it! :D
@MrShadesofGrey – Thank you! I hope it’s a big hit, too! And, all our games have our GreenPixel.ca logo link in them, so readers may come from there as well! :D
@SpiritOfAdventure – You have turned a good day into an even better day! Thank -you-:D (Bathing? That was the first thing to go ;) )

Joe on May 18, 2011 at 9:19 am

@Joe- Yeah! I almost think it would be better if you just picked a couple random Tom Dick or Harrys that got trapped in a buiding or something, and sent them on a random adventure. In other words, I agree. It would probably be better to give the RPG its own storyline. In any case, I’m sure if you started all the projects that everyone wants, you would probably want a lot more people helping you.
I’m no good with code, but I guess I am a music student… I could TRY to compose some stuff. I didn’t have time to start experimenting with something like that during the school year, but I guess I could give it a shot. It would be my first attempt at something like this, or even composing at all… so no promises. I guess this isn’t the proper channel to say something like that anyway. *shrugs* Whatever. *Runs to get roll out piano and composition software* I’ll just try different stuff and see what happens. If nothing else, at least I can say I tried. XD

Willy on May 18, 2011 at 9:34 am

JOE NO! DOn’t let that girl tie you down! NO!… Ugh, some many love triangles and such… SUCH!

Alterego1092 on May 18, 2011 at 10:11 am

Am i the only one who laughed when Joe said that they were married? Either way, i loved the game! I thought it was a little short, but that’s just me. I hope the game brings more readers. :)

Ellie on May 18, 2011 at 10:15 am

Been playing the game a bit more. Just discovered you can click and hold to auto fire the rocket launcher, with many gleeful levels ensuing. The girl sitting opposite me in the library also looked relieved I’d stopped with the loud and furious clicking!

Chris B Chikin on May 19, 2011 at 2:08 am

Had a couple more ideas as well:
* Instead of a counter at the top showing the number of civilians, how about a signpost on the wall saying “New Hammerston, Pop: [XXX]”
* When civilians die before reaching the gate, have them leave a corpse like the enemies
* When a weapon or other upgradeable is fully upgraded, have something change about their appearance. Joe, Bernie and Jess could have their weapons turn gold or something and we could maybe see some sandbags or reinforcements around the gate when it’s complete. They don’t make any difference to the gameplay, but they do look cool and it’s a nice little reward for the player.
* Have you thought about releasing the game as an iPhone or Android App? I’d pay for it!

Chris B Chikin on May 19, 2011 at 2:29 am

…And a couple more:
* Putting in an achievements system where you get points for completing certain goals (e.g. fully upgrading something, saving every survivor in a wave, surviving a wave without clicking) just to give something else to aim for besides a high score.
* Giving some more variety to the vampire images. The uniform look makes sense for the other enemies but you’d expect vampires to look diferent from each other.

…then again, with some goths I can’t tell the boys from the girls, so maybe you’re right about that one!

Chris B Chikin on May 19, 2011 at 2:58 am

Joe, the best decision maker ever. Hands down.

Locke on May 19, 2011 at 5:18 am
