Go, Go, Childhood Memories! | March 24, 2017

I’m taking my 6-year-old to see the new Power Rangers movie tomorrow but, really, I’m gonna be the kid that’s going :D

I was 8 when Power Rangers debuted in Canada. Twenty four (!) years later, I still remember the first episode and my hyper-excited reaction to it. It instantly became my favourite thing… like, EVER. I imitated everything they did – from the way they talked to the way they drop kicked monsters (though I had to launch myself from the couch). I begged my parents for all the toys – all my presents from that point were Power Rangers-related. I followed the series, the movies, and the characters until the franchise had to inevitably change everything up with new actors, zords, bad guys, etc. I just lost interest at that point, especially after my all-time favourite Ranger, Tommy aka the Green/White Ranger, left the cast (and became an MMA fighter, go figure).

With this reboot – which looks god-awful, by the way, but I don’t care :D – I can feel a little bit of that 8-year-old spark creep up with excitement. When I hear the throwback tunes and cheesy lines, I get goosebumps! But, when I see my own little boy watch Power Rangers on Netflix, I don’t see the same reaction in his face. I believe that with the insane amount of content he has access to – endless Netflix shows on demand, games like Minecraft and Terraria that rely on his own imagination and storytelling, infinite YouTube videos – his interests and passion are spread way more diversely. He hasn’t latched on to one thing as strongly as I latched on to Power Rangers. Back then, all I had was scheduled TV shows and a few games on SNES. So, clearly, I’m going to be the fan-boying little kid going to the theatre tomorrow :D

Anybody else gonna go see it despite terrible-looking trailers and poor reviews?

Impressive as it might be, I still think Joe would crush him easily. Especially with the help of Rosa.
I wonder what he wants from Rusty… as much as I hate the guy, he should still go down in a blaze of glory. Like the shitty viking he is :D

I think he(Tommy) returned in a later series, as a black ranger… Was ninja storm or dino-force…. Think it was dino.

I was like 12 when it dropped over here and of course I was into giant robots.
Without internet I didn’t know the original didn’t have those bullshit teen drama intermissions but only in your face battles between a monster and the team. cukf saban.

Strange. I thought the trailer looked awesome, until I saw that it was a Power Rangers reboot. Then I knew it was (probably) trash. I’m from a different generation, so all I know of power rangers is ridiculous poses and subliminal racism. I know it wasn’t really racist, but…
