Kickin’ It Old School :D | August 4, 2012

by Joe

I picked up Xenogears from PSN the other day and I’ve devoted a couple of hours these past few days playing it :D If you’ve never heard of it, Xenogears is a PSX RPG that was released in 1998. Yes, the graphics are noticeably dated (but as Mr. Retro Pixel Art, who am I to say that! :D) but the story and game mechanics are still enjoyable to this day. It’s a Squaresoft classic that’s making me want to reach into my pockets and throw more money at PSN and maybe even eBay. Legend of Dragoon, Jade Cocoon, Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, Grandia, Breath of Fire IV, Chrono Cross, Legend of Mana, etc etc etc.

Just wish I had more spare time! :D Green Pixel is keeping me busy and I’m very happy about that! Still waiting on a response from Fan Expo about an indy booth so no news on that front yet. I’ve been meeting with Rich a lot and everything is starting to fit into a flexible routine :D Can’t believe I’ve only been in Canada for about two weeks! Feels like I never left!

Enjoy Scene 22 – “Long Way to Go”!

Want to see an animated .gif of Joe bopping his head with a piece of wood? Vote to see it! :D Please vote for The Pocalypse here everyday! I’m going to try coming up with a new incentive every update (or every few updates) :D Thank you for voting!

You can follow The Pocalypse on Facebook, Twitter and RSS!

Have a great weekend! :D

And just like that, Joe is two steps away from becoming my favorite character.
On the topic of great PSX games, I’ve got to say that Legend of Mana is my personal favorite of the ones you’ve listed. It’s… it’s positively fantastic, but at the same time it’s somewhat divisive. It is a game not about the player, but rather about the world around them, and how they interact with it. The player is never the focus (until the end,) but… I think that’s part of its message.

I could write a long essay about how fantastic I think Legend of Mana is. Pokiehl’s got some depth to his words, and the game’s background art is fantastic. The gameplay is fun and enjoyable, and the replay value is solid… I’ll stop myself here.

I’ve got such conflicting emotions over Chrono Cross, I think you might benefit more from playing Chrono Trigger and then reading “Chrono Trigger: An Existentialist Reading.” It’s an eye-opener as to just what kind of artistic depth the game designers put into their game, even in the SNES days.

I hope you’re really enjoying the PSX games.

This scene was fantastic, as well. I’m really looking forward to seeing more of this “training” that Joe’s set on.

You never cease to amaze me Joe. God damn you and your narrative abilities. You remind me of a pixel-art and webcomic based Bryan Lee-O’Malley. Hell, we all know you can draw really damn well too from the sketches you provide.

Jeez, I sure hope Scrufflebeck doesn’t get reintegrated.

Also, this comic is so freaking addictive! I discovered it a few days ago and flipped through the first few episodes thinking, “This will just be another mediocre web-comic that I will lose interest in a few minutes of reading.” I’ve spent the last two days doing nothing but eating, sleeping, and reading this comic.

Scrufflebeck! Don’t return to your family, they’re evil!!!

But, I really enjoy Joe’s enthusiam to train harder. Can’t wait until he loses that cocky personality of his… then he’ll be awesome.

Nice work on the comic Joe. I also like the music you have added. What is it?

“dadada dun dun-KKKKKKKKK!” XD I literally laughed there. I LOVE it when music scrapes out like that! Then later, I was like, “SCRUFFLEBECK!! Don’t remember for sure why he’s alone but I think I can figure it out! I missed that bark of his! I think that much plantlife in a road would be a lot more uneven and involve a lot more large plants than grass but- Wait…oh no… that can’t be good… NO SCRUFFLEBECK! BAD DOG! NOOOOOOOOOoooooooo……….” XD

I don’t think he’s in danger he would have avoided it if there was a danger to it, it could be a place where they are other plant forms like him or maybe a clue to how Scrufflebeck came to be? Also it seems that Joe is having issues with inner Joe or Victor rather in terms of his emotions, it seems to be triggered more when he is angry or upset maybe.

Legend of Dragoon… So many memories. That was my first RPG and led them to being one of my favorite genres of games. I actually just started playing through a ROM of it on my laptop using my PS3 controller. Well, off to go kill some dragons!

Pssst NeoWarrior it’s plantpuppy

Also plant aren’t evil, when you come to think about it they have a lot in common with the machines. They don’t whant to destroy everything or kill humans. Machines and plant goal are to expand and evolve. And well they have some aggressive way to do it… it’s all about evolution/improvement. The plant evolves, but they need more space, and possibly something more than soil, water and sun since a plant tried to ate Joe and Rosa. The machines always want improvement, they also need more and more space, and they captures other being in order to study them in case they could find a way to improve their mechanics.

In the very end, if humans are unables to contain every other factions everything that’s left will be machines and plant… the whole world covered in machine city and mutant jungle.
But… hey another intelligent lifeform could appear and evolve in the jungle… or be created in the machine citie… resulting int two civilisations… oh my god…
err I think I went far from the conversation. Were was I? Oh yes, machines and plant have

@camelcase i forgot to say this, but it’s odd how with one of his combos at max level, he does less damage in dragon than with that combo

@Not going to say: Yeah, I usually run with Dart and Kongol (who looks even more boss as a Dragoon), and then the other one would be whoever I wanted, usually based on where I was. Sadly, no combo of characters could make up for Lavitz, though :'(

@CamelCase, I was being really forgetful, the guy who’s combo was stronger than his dragon attacks, was Haschel. I was really sad when lavitz died, he was one of my favorites, and to rub salt in the wound, i could never get the hang of his replacements combos

@Not going to say: Yeah, Albert’s combos are kind of awkward to try to use. I watched a video of the top ten saddest moments in gaming, and Lavitz’s death was on there.

CamelCase

@Not going to say: Actually, I think they meant it to be that way. Albert plays very similarly to Lavitz, but it’s not quite the same. No matter what, he’ll never quite fill Lavitz’s place on the team.
