Mining Vs. Ads – Your Opinion | September 29, 2017

by Joe

I’m sure a lot of you have read the news about Pirate Bay running a script on their website that uses its visitors’ computers to mine cryptocurrency for them. Here’s an article about it https://torrentfreak.com/the-pirate-bay-website-runs-a-cryptocurrency-miner-170916/.

Basically, as far as I understand, if you visited the site, the script would use your computer’s processing and graphics card power to mine tiny amounts of cryptocurrency to the site’s wallet. A tiny amount individually but with thousands of visitors mining to one wallet, I imagine it adds up pretty quickly.

It got me thinking: what if I replace The Pocalypse’s ads with this script? I don’t know what kind of revenue it would produce or if it’d be worth it since visitors don’t stay for very long (a scene takes 5 minutes at most to view, right?). And, honestly, I don’t feel good about using your electricity to make revenue. Especially if I don’t tell you about it.

To be completely transparent, I don’t plan on using a script like this for The Pocalypse. But, it did pique my curiosity: what do you, as a visitor, think about script mining vs. ads? Would you be willing to use your computer to idly mine money for a site owner?

Thanks for your opinion and, again, I’m not gonna do it for the site and nothing’s changing :D Thank you for your support as always!

i have several sites open at the same time very often. this is a no go if they all leach 90% of my cycles especially if I’m running background processes.

They do have caught a lot of flak for that afaik.

Sorry Jake, he didn’t miss you because Bernie is still inside.
He missed you because he is actually an X-COM soldier. (Most likely one under my command.)

Well it would be still faster than some other pages :-D

I feel like it could work. Maybe a disclaimer comes up when the sites starts mining, or make it optional.

Yeah, but if you can inject mining code, what’s to say you can’t inject malware? The only way that this could work is if you have a manual download and installation that’s optional on your site.
