Story Recap Part One! | October 22, 2014

by Joe

Let’s do a recap of me, too! Why not :D

I started The Pocalypse on October 10, 2010 in Yokohoma, Japan, where my wife and I were living at the time. My wife was pregnant with our first child and we were having a blast in a country that we’ve always wanted to visit. One The Pocalypse-related memory I have about the early days is reading some really negative feedback about the comic on a forum site I stumbled upon. I was on vacation in Okinawa at the time and, while it didn’t ruin the trip, it did get me down to read the first batch of negative feedback. It didn’t get me down for long, though! It taught me to focus on all the positive comments and praise and to use any feedback as a tool to get better :D

My son was born on January 15, 2011 in Yokohama and my life completely changed. I was a stay-at-home dad and all my projects, The Pocalypse, and my newborn kept me super busy. I somehow still managed to get scenes out at a steady pace and explore Japan. I have no idea how I did it!

March 11, 2011 marked another huge event, not just for me and my family but for the entire world. That was the day of the Tohoku earthquake. Although we were miles and miles away from the epicentre, we still felt a huge jolt and local supermarkets were soon emptied of the bare essentials, such as bread and water. We watched the ensuing tsunami ravage Japan’s northern coasts on TV and then a new disaster was born out of all the destruction.

Every news outlet available told the same story: Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was in meltdown. We didn’t know what to do. Our home country, Canada, told us to stay put so we did. Not fully understanding the range and effect of the plant’s nuclear fallout and news from around the world reporting contradicting facts, we were pretty scared, as was the rest of Japan and most of the world. We did make it through, though and the world really pulled together as the threat died down.

Looking back, as scary and stressful as it all was, I’m glad that I experienced a piece of world history. I learned about myself and my relationship with my wife was ultimately strengthened, knowing that we could handle a situation like that, especially with a baby.

All of that pretty much took me to the end of Chapter 2 in the story and that’s where we’ll end tonight :D

Enjoy Chapters 1 & 2!

Hey Joe I have been following your story from the start, finding out about it from another webcomic. I am glad you have found success in a field you are passionate about, and with your family. Keep getting after it, there are still better days to come!

Also I am sorry to say that I used to be a guy who only commented first but do know I just felt pride knowing I would stay up late or get up early to check of you posted. I had no online etiquette but that did not appreciate the effort it takes for you to do all this, I was just a young kid being selfish and wanting to shout how important reading this comic and commenting were to me.

Whoa, that sure was a nice trip down memory lane indeed! I had forgot how awesome the “vampire stronghold” arc was!

Also, my respect goes to you for how you didn’t let yourself down after reading those negative comments early on, and now you could as well go back to that forum, show those jerks how far you have gone with The Pocalypse and how many fans have become addict to your series, haha! :D

Found it abit awkward to read most of this recap,i kept just reading either the bottom or top and skipping to next bit by accident. Also in the vampire stronghold one of the sentences doesn’t finish from Raj,just ends with “the”.

Anyways was a good recap i would have done it differently though but thats just me :)

@WM28UK: I had no issues with the “top+bottom” text thing, but it’s just a matter of tastes I guess :)

Man, I just finished reading the whole story over again… It’s just amazing how your characters, their backgrounds, their happiness and sorrow can get into us so easily. I’ll be watching all the recaps too, I want the whole story to stay fresh in my head. Take your time Joe, I’ll be here reading/watching every new scene of the comic!
