Strike First, Strike Hard, No Mercy | May 18, 2018

Eagerly awaiting a late-night Deadpool 2 showing but, really, the highlight of my week was the greatest thing ever: Cobra Kai.

If you don’t know what Cobra Kai is – how dare you – it’s a Youtube series sequel to 1984’s The Karate Kid and its two movie sequels. What makes it most interesting is that it mostly revolves around the antagonist in the original Karate Kid, Johnny Lawrence. Yup, the blonde bully who got crane kicked in the face by our skinny hero, Daniel LaRusso. Actually, the show revolves around both adult Johnny and Daniel (and their families) but I couldn’t help but feel more for Johnny. I think that’s one of the reasons I got so hooked on the show – I HATED Johnny as a kid. I cried tears of joy when Daniel got that last point in the tournament and Johnny handed him his karate champion trophy. But, in Cobra Kai, as a adult and a “failure”, Johnny is an anti-hero worth rooting for.

Johnny’s former master, Kreese’s “Strike First, Strike Hard, No Mercy” Cobra Kai philosophy still lives on through Johnny but there’s a spin on it that is relevant and actually positive in today’s society. It’s hard to draw a line, especially as a parent, but there are instances where I feel we’re too sensitive and too easily offended. The Cobra Kai philosophy offers a more brutish and aggressive, alpha stance that we don’t see very often anymore in today’s media. But, like Mr. Miyagi reminds us in the show, we have to find a balance :D

God, I can’t wait for Season 2.

I’m pretty sure that that guy is, or was a New Hammerston Rebel.

Pretty sure he was the leader. Really, though. He’s all “protect them by stopping this machine loonacy! What about the families?”. Proceeds to attack a confused family that doesn’t know what to do in general.

Nick says “What happened to you last doctor?”

Aside from that, I wonder if that guy is going to be (involuntarily) taken with the others.
