My brother told me about The Colony a few months ago and I kept putting it off, opting for endless re-runs of The Simpsons, South Park, Futurama, and Family Guy (yeah, TV is scarce here).
I finally got around to watching the first episode of the first season last night. I think it’s a great concept! As you can probably tell, I’m a big fan of post-apocalyptic media, so I was hooked after the first couple of minutes.
If you don’t know about the show, the first season is about a group of volunteers who are conducting a survival experiment in a post-apocalyptic setting. The group consists of people with various backgrounds and professions, such as a doctor, nurse, and a few engineers. They even threw an ex-convict in the mix. Their main goal is to survive in an abandoned manufacturing facility for 10 weeks with limited food and water. On top of that, they have to defend their home and themselves from marauders and looters (who are actors that are instructed not to physically harm the survivors). Neat, eh?
What does the show need? Zombies. I know it would take away from the “realism” and documentary-like feel of the show, but I think it would be cool if the survivors had to fend of roaming groups of zombies (played by actors or, even better, create some real zombies :D ). The survivors would have to scavenge for and equip themselves with firearms (loaded with non-fatal projectiles, of course) and other weapons. I’m sure this idea came up in the show’s production meetings, but was quickly shot down when the thought of an actor being gruesomely decapitated and incinerated by a homemade chainsaw-flamethrower came up.
I’ve only seen the first episode and I have the entire second season to watch as well. I’m hoping to get some good ideas, info, and some inspiration from this series. Oh, and if you’re all caught up on The Colony, NO SPOILORZ! ;)
Enjoy Scene 3 – “Some James Bond Shit”!
