First Impressions: The Colony Season One 10/13/2010

by Joe

My brother told me about The Colony a few months ago and I kept putting it off, opting for endless re-runs of The Simpsons, South Park, Futurama, and Family Guy (yeah, TV is scarce here).

I finally got around to watching the first episode of the first season last night. I think it’s a great concept! As you can probably tell, I’m a big fan of post-apocalyptic media, so I was hooked after the first couple of minutes.

If you don’t know about the show, the first season is about a group of volunteers who are conducting a survival experiment in a post-apocalyptic setting. The group consists of people with various backgrounds and professions, such as a doctor, nurse, and a few engineers. They even threw an ex-convict in the mix. Their main goal is to survive in an abandoned manufacturing facility for 10 weeks with limited food and water. On top of that, they have to defend their home and themselves from marauders and looters (who are actors that are instructed not to physically harm the survivors). Neat, eh?

What does the show need? Zombies. I know it would take away from the “realism” and documentary-like feel of the show, but I think it would be cool if the survivors had to fend of roaming groups of zombies (played by actors or, even better, create some real zombies :D ). The survivors would have to scavenge for and equip themselves with firearms (loaded with non-fatal projectiles, of course) and other weapons. I’m sure this idea came up in the show’s production meetings, but was quickly shot down when the thought of an actor being gruesomely decapitated and incinerated by a homemade chainsaw-flamethrower came up.

I’ve only seen the first episode and I have the entire second season to watch as well. I’m hoping to get some good ideas, info, and some inspiration from this series. Oh, and if you’re all caught up on The Colony, NO SPOILORZ! ;)

Enjoy Scene 3 – “Some James Bond Shit”!

If you’re serious about surviving the Zombie ‘Pocalypse, first thing you need to do is get out of Japan and over here to the U S of A.

Something about a country where civilians can’t own firearms and where there isn’t too much extra land to hide on doesn’t seem too conducive to zombie survival. Japan is a zombie deathtrap, unarmed and trapped on an island.

Sure are a lot of curse words.

Good idea putting an add up on MSPA. Your comic seems really interesting and funny; Keep up the great work! ^_^

Bonzi77 on October 14, 2010 at 12:53 am

*ad bluh bluh huge typo

Bonzi77 on October 14, 2010 at 7:45 am

@Bonzi77 Yeah, MSPA has a huge fan base and I think we’re pretty similar, what with the clicking and all :)

@Silly Goose Yeah, Joe is a foul bastard, isn’t he?

@Severely Awesome I agree, Japan is not the best place to be during the zombie apocalypse. I’ll be on the first boat outta here when it hits (me and the other 120,000,000 people here ;) ).

Joe on October 14, 2010 at 7:57 am

Heh, nice. I like the art style. I’ll probably add this to my list of webcomics. Came here from MSPA btw.

Labs on October 14, 2010 at 8:58 am

I would find it completely unsurprising if andrew himself became a fan.

That said, dude can he seriously pump out the episodes. For realz. He posted like, what, 9 or ten in the last day? Jesus eating hamburgers, that is a metric buttload. If you’re advertising to his peeps, hope you can keep up.

parahacker on October 14, 2010 at 9:29 am

I clicked on the MSPA ad by accident, haha, but still read all that’s up so far. I love the pixel art so much! The animation’s really smooth too, and everything’s just plain fun to look at. Looking forward to updates. :)

You can’t wait for the Pocalypse to leave. You won’t be able to get out of there AFTER it happens! You need to get here NOW and learn to shoot guns and survive in the wilderness.

You can’t learn this stuff from movies, and the martial arts they teach you over there are not the things you want to use on face eating zombies. You’ll want to stay far away, at bullet range.

Severely Awesome on October 14, 2010 at 10:09 am

@Labs – Thanks! MSPA is getting me the most hits by far, compared to Google and Facebook!
@parahacker – No kidding he can pump them out! I’ll pump the out as fast as I can :D
@p&p – Thanks!

I love this,
That being said I say you should advertise on some of the zombie game things
Like Urban dead(its a text based mmorpg) and Lost zombies(its like facebook for zombie apocalypse nuts, like me)

Eastar on October 14, 2010 at 5:07 pm

@Eastar – Thanks for the tips! I now have an ad up on Urban Dead and a profile on Lost Zombies (which is a cool site, by the way)!

Joe on October 14, 2010 at 9:40 pm

Yea I got too all this through Urban Dead myself. As for the coming to America. Yea we American’s think we’re all that but our country is one of the most fucked up in reality. It’s a great country for fighting a zombie war sure mostly because of space, and not because you can learn weapons handling. You can learn weapon handling anywhere as long as your smart about it and keep it low key.

Martial Arts will come in handy because no matter what Severely awesome thinks, he isn’t looking at the long run. What happens when you run out of ammo. Because that will happen quite often after some time of running around. Dun forget the U.S military will be quickly grabbing everything to “Defend our Country from these Foreign Invaders” early on. Martial Arts will mean you can use melee weapons with more proficiency and kill those undead bastards.

As I said on my last Blog message on here. Friends and I are currently running Zombie Awareness Classes and Zombie Survival Classes in the Oregon Area. We go out into the woods with people dressed for the zombies and the others have Airsoft guns with a limited supply of rounds. We don’t do the slow zombies either. As fast as a human can move so can the zombie. Best to play it safe afterall.

I just really like this comic and you are amazing :P
The art style is so radical and the amount of detail you put into backgrounds and stuff is just awesome!!
Subscribe’d to the max :0

@Zion Wolfblood – That’s awesome that you and your friends are running Zombie Awareness and Zombie Survival classes! If I’m ever in Oregon, I’d love to participate :D
@Takorii – Thanks!

Joe on October 15, 2010 at 8:37 am

Yeah… Still zombies aren’t the ONLY apocalyptic sorce out there (meteors, aliens, darkhole, supernova, animal rebelion, over-terrorism…) So far the most dangerous of them all is…

believe me, it’s worst than zombes…

NeoPhantom, Mirage Warrior of the Netherlands on October 18, 2010 at 9:10 pm

I love the Colony. It’s great for information on surviving in general.

Wait, he put the C4 INSIDE the canned food? What a waste, I would have just put the C4 on the ceiling and kept the food. I also didn’t get the pepto bismol joke, explain?

For those interested. I am moving to Georgia to live with my Parents. They invited me to come help take care of the farm and I accepted. If you wish to become a member of the Zombie Awareness Survival Classes feel free to look me up as I will be moving my section down there. A friend named DarkReign is taking over up here for now.
